"It's no mistake, Jean"

“Nee-koh-dee-mu.” I felt hyper conscious of my pronunciation as we studied the story of Nicodemus in CHINESE.

There were six of us: three WashU grad students, C, X, J, and J’s parents in our small group. We were all attending International Getaway, a year-end vacation for students to enjoy a beautiful YMCA camp and to hear about the teachings of Jesus.

“What if I’m too used to the darkness to recognize the light?” said J’s mother as we studied. “What if I just don’t want to be light?” huffed J’s father crossing his hands over his chest. I sat there in awe of how my ability to speak Chinese (albeit elementary) was an asset to people engaging God’s Word and His hope! The six of us proceeded to explore how we could recognize the light. J, who just became a Christian this last year, shared about Jesus, the light of the world. With tears in her eyes, she said to her parents, “I wouldn’t press this issue if I didn’t love you. We all wish for you to know the light.” J’s mother said tenderly, “I know, dear, but give us time. This is hard to understand.” And we all full-heartedly agreed. In fact Nicodemus himself was a religious scholar and he also wrestled.

What an amazing joy to be with these Chinese students and their family. I saw God moving deeply! J later thanked us for giving her a reason to share Jesus with her family. And in the midst of beginning to experience my NEW MINISTRY to internationals, I heard God say to me “It’s not a mistake, Jean, that you are here.” And I saw God weaving together both my training in ministry, my experience as a coach, and my Chinese heritage. I am in awe of God’s timing. Because without significant training, significant security in my Chinese-American identity, and a deeper understanding of Christ, I would not have been able to partner with God moving in J’s parents’ hearts. I feel a sense of deep anticipation as I join God in advancing His kingdom amongst the nations.
